  • Is the program confidential?

    Yes. We only ask your first name.

  • Is this program connected to the Board of Registration in Nursing (BORN)

    No.  The MNA a Professional Association representing 23,000 nurses in Massachusetts.  We are not connected to the Board of Registration in Nursing or the Substance Abuse Rehabilitation Program (SARP) which is run out of the BORN

  • Why does MNA offer this program?

    MNA is the Professional Association and Union for direct care nurses in Massachusetts with over 23,000 members.  We established Peer Assistance program in the mid 1980s to support our nurse colleagues with a substance use problems and provide guidance toward recovery.

  • Is there a cost for the program participation?

    No.  Our Peer Assistants volunteer their time.

  • Do you have to be an MNA member to utilize the Peer Assistance Program?

    No, we help all nurses and student nurses in Massachusetts

  • Who are your Peer Assistants?

    MNA Peer Assistants are nurses who volunteer their time and knowledge of recovery to assist other nurses.

  • Is the Peer Assistant a Counselor or Therapist?

    The program utilizes nurse volunteers to offer peer support.

  • If I want information on recovery resources, can I contact the Peer Assistance Program?

    Yes.  We welcome calls from anyone seeking information.  

  • Can a family member or nurse colleague call for assistance?

    Yes, for information, but the nurse in need must make the request for Peer Assistance help.

  • Can a nurse manager or supervisor contact the Peer Assistance Program?

    Yes for information about the program only.  Nurse requests for peer support are kept confidential and the nurse in need must initiate the call. 


    The MNA provides a free, downloadable Guidebook and Resource book for Impaired Practice in Nursing which may offer additional information for Managers or Supervisors. Download your copy.

  • Can Student Nurses utilize the program?

    Yes, we offer Peer Assistance to student nurses as well.

  • Can other licensed Health Care Professionals utilize the program?

    Yes, we can offer information and guidance on recovery resources.

  • Can I become a Peer Assistant?

    We are always looking for Volunteer Peer Assistants who are in recovery.  Please contact us for more information about the criteria and the next scheduled training.
